State Minister Markus Blume and Director Prof. Dr. Josef Schrädler tapped the first keg of Weihenstephaner Helles at Platzl on March 27.
“Come to stay: Our Weihenstephan state brewery is coming to Munich's Platzl. The World's Oldest Brewery is moving into the historic surroundings of Munich's old town - a perfect fit: a combination like hops and malt and a real upgrade for the Platzl.” This was announced today by Bavaria's Minister of Science Markus Blume together with the Weihenstephan's Director Prof. Dr. Josef Schrädler directly at the Platzl in Munich. “Munich is the beer city par excellence. And the Platzl is our Munich living room. So it's a perfect fit that we will have the highest density of state breweries in the world here in future. Weihenstephaner is a strong ambassador for Bavaria in the world. The brewery exports its Bavarian premium product to 60 countries. Weihenstephaner is at home in Freising and now also in Munich,” said the Minister of Science. The Weihenstephan State Brewery is the responsibility of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts.
Prof. Dr. Josef Schrädler: “We want to do something special here”
Prof. Dr. Josef Schrädler said: “The location is perfect for us - not too big, not too small. Weihenstephan focuses on highest quality - that's why we want to do something special here.”
The state brewery will open a restaurant at Platzl in the beginning of 2026. The concept for the “Weihenstephaner am Platzl” envisages a special Weihenstephan bar with around 180 seats (plus outdoor area), which combines sophisticated beer culture and beer variety with fine Bavarian food culture. The future catering premises are located in a building owned by the Free State of Bavaria and used by the Bavarian State Opera.
